'Smile 2' and 'We Live in Time' are among the new movies in Milwaukee this week (2024)

You’d be hard-pressed to find a more diverse ensemble of new movies in theaters in the same weekend. There’s grinning mayhem, world leaders fighting zombies, Jackie Chan protecting a panda and two fresh film festivals.

Here’s what’s new in Milwaukee-area theaters starting Friday, as well as some of the new movies available on streaming and on demand this week.

‘Smile 2’

Short version: A pop star (Naomi Scott) sees smiling people, everywhere — and really bad things happen to them, in this sequel to the 2022 horror hit.

‘We Live in Time’

Short version: In this years-spanning romantic drama, Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield meet not-so-much-cute-as-quirky, fall in love, build a life together — and then face terrible hardship.

‘Exhibiting Forgiveness’

Short version: An acclaimed painter of large-scale works (Andre Holland) has to confront the troubles of his childhood when his long-estranged father (John Earl Jelks) shows up hoping to reconcile. Andra Day and Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor co-star in this emotional drama that has drawn significant film-festival-circuit attention for writer-director Titus Kaphar, making his feature-film debut.

‘Rumours’

Short version: G7 leaders meet at a retreat in the woods to resolve a global crisis, only to find themselves cut off and forced to grapple with a zombie-like uprising and their own passions. Cate Blanchett, Alicia Vikander and Charles Dance star in this zombie-apocalypse melodrama/comedy co-directed by Canadian surrealism master Guy Maddin.

‘Goodrich’

Short version: After his second wife disappears from his life, a struggling art-gallery operator (Michael Keaton) seeks his adult daughter’s (Mila Kunis) help in raising his young twins. Andie MacDowell, Laura Benanti, Hallie Meyers-Shyer and Carmen Ejogo co-star in this cross-generational dramedy.

‘Blink’

Short version: When three of their four children are diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa, a rare genetic disorder that causes progressive loss of eyesight, a family decides to to hit the road so their kids can see as much of the world as they can while they can. National Geographic’s film division follows along in this inspirational documentary.

‘Allswell in New York’

Short version: In New York City, three sisters juggle single motherhood, career and family. Liza Colón-Zayas, Elizabeth Rodriguez, Daphne Rubin-Vega, Max Casella, Michael Rispoli, Mackenzie Lansing and Bobby Cannavale star in this dramedy.

‘Panda Plan’

Short version: After Jackie Chan (playing himself) adopts a beloved zoo panda, an international crime syndicate offers a huge bounty for the bear’s capture, testing Chan’s action-hero chops while he tries to protect his new charge. This Chinese action-comedy is showing in Mandarin with English subtitles.

‘Gracie & Pedro: Pets to the Rescue!’

Short version: A pair of constantly bickering pets (one’s a cat, the other’s a dog) are separated from their family during a move across the country, and they have to find their way to their new home together. Susan Sarandon, Bill Nighy, Brooke Shields, Danny Trejo, Alicia Silverstone and Al Franken head the voice cast in this animated family adventure.

Milwaukee Muslim Film Festival at Oriental Theatre

The Milwaukee Muslim Film Festival, presented by the Muslim Women’s Coalition and the Greater Milwaukee Foundation, runs Oct. 17-20 at the Oriental Theatre. “Alien Country”: Talk about a bad day — after a demolition derby driver and his girlfriend learn she’s pregnant, they unwittingly open a portal that allows a swarm of bio-engineered aliens to wreak havoc in their small hometown. “Woman of the Hour”: In 1970s Los Angeles, a struggling actor (Anna Kendrick) agrees to appear on “The Dating Game,” only to pick as her date a man who’s actually a serial killer. Kendrick also makes her directorial debut with this thriller, which is based on a true story. On Netflix Oct. 18.

“Fanatical: The Catfishing of Tegan and Sara”: This documentary explores a catfishing scheme that targeted fans of the indie rock duo Tegan and Sara, as well as the dark side of fandom. On Hulu Oct. 18.

“Canary Black”: A superspy (Kate Beckinsale) is blackmailed by terrorists who give her a choice: betray her country or lose her kidnapped husband. Rupert Friend, Saffron Burrows and Ray Stevenson co-star in this action thriller. On Prime Video Oct. 24.

“Yintah”: This Canadian documentary focuses on the Wet'suwet'en people as they oppose the construction of multiple pipelines through their unceded territory. On Netflix Oct. 18.

“Carved”: In this horror comedy, a group of survivors are trapped in a historical reenactment village on Halloween and have to do battle with a vengeful pumpkin. DJ Qualls and Chris Elliott star. On Hulu Oct. 21.

“Out of My Mind”: A nonverbal girl with cerebral palsy tries to navigate sixth grade — with help from some assistive technology and devoted friends. Phoebe Taylor-Ray, Rosemarie DeWitte and Jennifer Aniston (as the girl’s inner voice) star in this inspirational drama. On Disney+ Oct. 22.
